Crypto Wave

Today, I will be jumping onto Crypto-Currencies which have been in the spotlight for a long time (most people probably thinking if they’ve missed the chance to get into it)

Background

I was a disbeliever of Crypto initially being part of the financial sector white collar worker, you understand that Bitcoin/Ethereum have no intrinsic value. However I’ve started to dab into BTC and ETH (2 main crypto) starting in November, trying to diversify my own portfolio. Many people are starting to dab into Crypto mainly because how fiat currencies have been depreciating such as USD and other major currencies in Fed’s QE. For myself, these factors are actually what drives me into crypto; hedge against inflation (BTC has limited supply), more real money institutions are jumping onto the BTC bandwagon, many banks are creating their own crypto team and setting up crypto exchanges, and lastly with many people’s livelihood revolves around crypto firms, it will be difficult for government to shut these down suddenly.

Bitcoin

As of writing, BTC/USD is currently around 26.5k USD, and people always ask if they’re too late to the game. I’d say put in some money, many investors are stating that BTC relative value might be USD 100K/300K/400K (take it with a pinch of salt). But let’s say if you have money sitting around, for example 1k SGD and put it all in, your downside is only 1kSGD, and if the BTC hits 100K, you get 4K SGD in value, and you do the math for further rally (as usual, do you homework before jumping in).

Strategy

My personal view for BTC is to jump in if there’s another dip (I don’t like to enter the market when it is at all time-high). Surprisingly, the rally from 20K USD to 28.2K USD was really a shock to most conventional guys in the finance sector.

Aside from this, I put in SGD 500 (sum that I’m ok with losing) and doing speculative swing trading in crypto mainly in BTC and ETH. Main reason is that there’s decent volatility in the crypto space, so just buy low and sell high is the key to go. I’ve made around 8% return on my first month (just a puny SGD 40, every dollar saved is every dollar you can compound), but I reckon I cant mimic the result with a bigger capital (maybe double or up to 2k SGD is fine), as I still do it without algo-assistance, emotion will still get to me. I will definitely be engaging in a more safe strategy if it is 10x my capital at 5k SGD.

Brokerage

In case anyone might be keen to get started on crypto in Singapore, I’ve done some homework and Binance.sg is probably the cheapest option you have in Singapore. Binance is a reputable platform that has been around for quite some time, and recently set up their Singapore arm, while it is the cheapest at 0.6% fee, Binance.sg doesn’t have an APP and to top-up, you’ll need to set up Xfer.

Personally I use CoinHako, another platform in Singapore which has an APP and easy to use, can top up via bank transfer easily. However the rate is much worst, default it stands at 1%, but you can key in “COINGECKO” for 0.8%, and from time to time, they have promotion that lowers the commission to 0.7%. I like the daily login reward, and also per trade you earn points to change for some crypto or cheaper commissions. If you’re keen, do use my referral link to join! I get 20% of your commission (well I’m keen to share these small bonus with you if you let me know and we can do 50:50, and again, every cent saved is every cent that can be compounded), https://www.coinhako.com/affiliations/sign_up/157292_33042665

Wrap-up Thoughts

Hopefully we can get a few people on my referral and let me earn a little bonuses 🙂 but on a more serious note, do your homework, and don’t take people’s word at face value. Another thing is start early will always be better, if BTC is really hitting 100K, it will be better if you buy now at 27.5k USD than buying it at 50K USD and if you have a strong belief and view, don’t let noise affect you.

While I can still pump out content since I’ve just started, but I hope whoever is reading can let me know what content might be interesting so I can KIV it for future posts.
